An In-House Knowledge Repository for Design Firm
2018-2026
The Architectural Information Hub
(AIH)
Introduction
This is a group project with Norah Zhou, Vlad Serenko, Kex Zhang, Joy Gu
Vertex Design Partners (a fiction name) is a family-owned architecture firm. Presently, project data is scattered across emails, meeting notes, and personal files. Retrieval of it is therefore delayed and inefficient. Research shows that capturing historical data with software leads to better project outcomes.
Off-the-shelf project management tools like AutoCAD and Deltek have failed previously in this firm because of high training needs and low adoption, which are common problems in the industry. To fix inefficiency, this project proposes an in-house solution called the Architectural Information Hub (AIH) using existing tools in Microsoft Suites.
The AIH will centralize project information, enhance information quality at senior levels, and thus support faster project completion. This goal is supported by research suggesting that broader information systems “technologies will enable the construction industry to reduce wasteful and inefficient practices”. In designing the system, priority should be given to information quality since it is the accuracy, timeliness, and relevance of information that will guide decision making.
